Description
I joined a 5-day challenge starting February 17, 2023, and the theme for this challenge was “It’s A Bird”. Here is my Day 1. I am searching my archives for one bird images to edit for this challenge. While I was in California last year, I was able to visit a few beaches. Today’s photograph was on a day in Ventura which was super foggy, but I still enjoyed sitting in the sand and watching the sea gulls. This one beautiful gull just strutted by and I got a nice shot of it in its walking action. This is a Ring Billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) and these type birds spend the winter along the west, east and southern parts of the United States. It is estimated that there are three to four million of these birds in the country. Not only do they like the coastlines but they also can be seen in marshes, the countryside and freshwater lakes. They are named so because of the black ring around its bill. Fun fact: This bird uses the earth’s magnetic field as a built-in compass to orient itself for migration travels. I edited this image in a watercolor painterly style for a vintage type ornithology illustration.
