October 24, 2022, Journal Entry:
I just can’t get enough of the sweet hummingbirds in this area. The fountains in the courtyard where my sister lives attract these hummingbirds. They play in the water that flows from the beaks of the heron statues and have all kinds of moves when as they dance around the fountains. The position I captured here looks as if it is having a seat on the statue's head. I could stand there all day watching them! This is an Anna’s Hummingbird.
Anna’s Hummingbirds (Calypte anna) are a constant presence in this part of California. The males have rose-pink feathers that flash around their throat and top of their head. They are thought of as not too social and will be very aggressive when protecting their territories. It is considered a pollinator as they drink nectar, and the pollen of the flowers brush their faces which will pollinate other flowers as they feed. Besides nectar they also eat insects and spiders. They were named after a Duchess of Rivoli by the name of Anna de Belle Massena. Fun fact: These hummingbirds weigh about the same as two pennies.
