February 4, 2022, Journal Entry:
This is another image from our recent winter storm that dropped a few inches of snow. We put some bird seed on our deck rail and this pretty Blue Jay came up to grab a bite as the snow was falling. His beak was partially open after swallowing a seed. He is sitting on a little ceramic dish that we normally put in some bird seed but it was full of snow, so the seed got sprinkled along the rail.
The Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is in the Magpie and Crow family of birds. It is a loud bird and is mostly in the Eastern parts of the United States, although they are moving westward slowly. We have many in north central Texas. They call out their many sounds and it is said that they can imitate the screams of a Red Shouldered Hawk. They forage for food in trees, shrubs and on the ground and eat mostly vegetative matter and insects; they are omnivores and also eat small frogs, rodents and baby birds.
