November 12, 2022, Journal Entry:
These pretty and bright orange flowers were growing along a pathway in my sister’s community, here in California. They caught my eye because of their Fall Autumn colors. I photographed this close up to show all the tones within the shrub and leaves. I found out they are called Firecracker plants.
Firecracker plants (Cuphea ignea A.DC.) are also known as Cigar plant, Cigar flower and Mexican Cigar. They are in the Lythraceae family of plants and are a tropical evergreen type of shrub. They are native to Mexico and the West Indies. The flowers resemble a lit cigar hence one of the names of Cigar flower. Since it is a tropical plant, it needs a warm spot without any chance of frost in order to flourish. It is said they can also be grown as a houseplant.
