Description
The Swallowtail butterflies are starting to show up again now that Summer is fading and there are few wild flowers left in the fields. This big butterfly was flying around these blue mist flowers and landing ever so gently on them to look for nectar. Such a pretty insect.
The Yellow Swallowtail Butterfly is a favorite large butterfly (Papilionidae) of most people because of its brilliant colors. There are 600 species in the world but about 30 are in the United States -this one is in north Texas. Most have tails at their hind wings such as this one. They resemble a swallowtail bird and that is why they are named such. They feed on flowers and they do sip minerals and salts from mud or damp sand.
