February 10, 2022, Journal Entry:
This is another fun image from my day of hiking around after the snowfall last week. There is a wild forest of oak trees near our property that I go through to look for photo-ops of wildlife and this is the edge of it. A beautiful male Northern Cardinal plopped down on a branch of a hackberry tree that also grows in this area of oaks and wild vines. He really stood out against the snow and old brown leaves that were still stuck on the oak trees.
Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are active songbirds that sing a variety of melodies. They are actually omnivores, eating insects, grain, fruit and sap. Fun fact: They can live to 15 years old in the wild.
