I joined the 365-day Journal challenge for 2022 and here is my ‘Day 57’.
February 26, 2022, Journal Entry:
By now you all know the dish on our deck rail is there with a little bird seed as an extra place for the birds to get a snack (a little bowl-dish made by my blind mother). As we sit in our dining room to have coffee in the mornings, we can see this view and enjoy the birds at a close distance. These two birds became breakfast buddies but at first the Chipping Sparrow looked like it complained to the female Northern Cardinal about being there first. I think the size difference between the two of them is interesting and that little scrapper was not going to move when the big lady came to grab a bite.
The Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerine) is in the Passerellidae family of birds. The male has a brighter rust colored crown. They are common across North America and like to dwell in tree lined areas that are around open fields and meadows. They mostly eat seeds and are pretty much a ground forager. These are thin birds with a long tail.
Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are active song birds that sing a variety of melodies. They are actually omnivores, eating insects, grain, fruit and sap. They can live up to 15 years in the wild.
