July 18, 2022, Journal Entry:
Occasionally I will get a glimpse of the Painted Bunting bird that lands in the trees which line the meadow by our property. They don’t sit very long so I was happy to catch this pose of the colorful bird in the tree. I love seeing this unusual bird because of its colors and slight rarity in these parts of Texas.
Painted Buntings are a songbird and are a medium size bird. They forage mostly on the ground and are in the cardinal family of birds. They can live as long as ten years, but bird experts say that wild buntings only live about 5 years. Their numbers are declining and the experts are not sure why but suspect that one reason is the males are captured for illegal trade - mostly in the tropics. They are a migrating bird and breeding areas are common in the southern part of United States of America this time of year.
