December 21, 2022, Journal Entry:
We see a lot of birds around here where we live in the country, mostly cardinals but the woodpeckers are around too. This is cool woodpecker is from February of this year, out in the field meadow near me. I was going through my archives and I saw this and thought ‘Oh, he is showing off his red head for me’! I edited the image with a mild shadowing to tone down the surrounding trees. This is a Red-bellied Woodpecker.
Red-bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) are usually found in the southeast Unites States. The red belly is not often seen on these birds. They are omnivorous and eat insects, nuts, acorns, fruit and seeds. Sometimes they have been known to eat tree frogs, other bird eggs, sap and small fish. They are mostly found in forested areas. A fun fact is that they can stick their tongue out almost 2 inches past their beak. The oldest known Red-bellied woodpecker was identified in the wild by its foot band was a little over 12 years old.
