I joined the 365-day Journal challenge for 2022 and here is my ‘Day 319’.
November 15, 2022, Journal Entry:
My mom’s Thanksgiving cactus is starting to bloom, which I thought was a Christmas cactus but in researching the plant I found out it is actually a hybrid called Thanksgiving cactus. The pink flowers were tiny buds last week and now they are starting to open ever so slowly. We are leaving tomorrow to go back to Texas, and it made me happy to see these flowers show up before I leave.
Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) are in the Cactasceae family of plants and are a tropical cactus. Most people grow these cacti indoors but in California this one does well on the patio. They are also called Crab Cactus and Holiday Cactus and are slightly different than the Christmas Cactus. They bloom pretty flowers in the late Fall season and are native to Brazil in the rainforests. They have spineless flat stems which the flowers grow on. Fun fact: They are pollinated by Hummingbirds.
