July 13, 2022, Journal Entry:
Last week we visited with some friends who have a farm. They are raising pigs, cows, goats and many fowl besides chickens. This little pig was in a large pen and started to come to the fence to say hi. It a breed of pig called Kunekune. Its coloring is so interesting, not something I had ever seen before. I edited the image with a slight illustrative technique to bring the tones of the pig and wild hay grass out.
Kunekune pigs are native to New Zealand and are called Piri Piri in that country. Kunekune means round and fat – they can weigh between 200 and 400 pounds. They are slowly getting popular to raise in the United States as they are known as friendly and docile. They are great for free range farming. They will come to you and plop down for a belly rub and also ‘talk’ to you at feeding time. They will graze on the pasture but in winter should get supplemental feeds. They also like to eat fruits and vegetables. After researching this pig, if I had the room on our property, I would love to raise one - but I could not raise it for food because I would get attached to it!
