Description
This is a male Red-Bellied Woodpecker on a tree trunk of an Oak tree which still has Fall Autumn leaves on the branches. I was out bird watching and he landed for a few seconds. He looked around for a bit and then left. I lke that he was in a clearing of leaves you can see his back feathers and bright red head.
Red-bellied Woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus ) are 8 to 10 inches in length. The males have red that go from their beak to their neck and the females just have red at the nape of their necks. They are seen in the eastern two thirds of the United States and this one is in north Texas. They are omnivorous and mostly eat plant material, insects and sometimes small frogs, birds and fish.
Fun fact; they can stick out their tongues up to 2 inches past their beak. It is sharp and they can spear grasshopper and other insects with it.
