February 28, 2022, Journal Entry:
Awake very early this morning to edit and post for today. I am leaving for a road trip this morning and wanted to get this one posted before leaving. This is a new group to the infamous bird seed bowl. These are Brown-headed cow birds and apparently the word spread in bird world about the free bird seed. These guys are a bit of a bully bird, and you can see them puff their robust selves at each other. Still, they are an interesting species of bird, and I am glad I can capture the behaviors of the birds that visit us on the deck rail.
Brown-headed Cow Birds (Molothrus ater) are abundant in fields, prairies and edge of the woods. They are in the blackbird and oriole family of birds. Since they feed on insects that fly out of the grassy fields, they are seen following cattle around. We have many cattle ranches around where I live in north Texas, besides the lake and some marshlands, so I guess these guys are roaming the countryside hunting food elsewhere from where they normally hang out.
