Description
In the middle of the summer of 2022, I was outside hiking around a field meadow near us and saw this big hoverfly flying about the wild grass. It landed on a blade of grass and I was able to capture this close up. It is such an interesting insect.
Hoverflies are considered a ‘mimic bee’ because of their stripes and nectar seeking. They do not have a stinger and are pollinators of flowers. They are beneficial in that they eat aphids and other plant pests.
