Description
I joined a 5-day challenge starting February 17, 2023 and the theme for this challenge was “It’s A Bird”. Here is my Day 5. I am searching my archives for 'one bird' images to edit for this challenge. While I was in California last year, I had opportunity to visit a few beaches. On the day I photographed this pretty sea gull on Ventura Beach, it was really foggy. I liked the gray blue sky as it flew overhead. I edited the image with a watercolor painterly technique. This is an adult Western Gull.
Western Gulls (Larus occidentalis) are common along the west coast of the United States. They like to nest on islands and on shore cliffs. They can capture their prey while swimming and even in flight. Besides fish, carrion and trash, they will also eat other birds and eggs. They are scavengers and are known to follow marine mammals and fishing boats around for scraps. Fun fact: They have been known to nest near sea lion colonies; Not So Fun Fact: they will forage on any dead baby sea lions.
