May 11, 2022, Journal Entry:
My mom has pink carnations growing in her garden and there was one that grew up tall and straight. I photographed it in a portrait format and edited it with a slight watercolor painterly style. I also gave it a vintage appearance as if it could have been found in an old gardening book.
Carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus), also known as Dianthus, are great flowers for bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages because as a cut flower they last a long time. True carnations like this one have ruffled and frilly petals. They come in many colors like pink, red and white; and florists will dye white carnations other colors to match certain holidays. They have been around for over two thousand years and are thought to have originated in the Mediterranean regions. They have a strong almost peppery fragrance, and the word Carnation is Latin for crown or garland.
They are easy growers and thrive in this Southern California climate.
