June 1, 2022, Journal Entry:
This is a top view of a pretty red carnation in my mom’s garden. I think the fringed edges on the petals really stand out as they are a light pink tone. I edited the image with a very mild illustrated and painterly style.
Carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus), also known as Dianthus are great flowers for bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages because as a cut flower they last a long time. This is a true carnation because it has ruffled and frilly petals. They come in many colors like pink, red and white; and florists will dye white carnations other colors to match certain holidays. They have been around for over two thousand years and are thought to have originated in the Mediterranean regions. They have a strong almost peppery fragrance, and the word Carnation is Latin for crown or garland.
They are easy growers and thrive in this Southern California climate.
