March 28, 2022, Journal Entry:
In my mother’s garden there are Cymbidium Orchids that she loved to raise. She cannot tend to them anymore but some of them are still producing flowers and this is one of them. This close up shows the details of the flower with the burgundy speckles and gold stamen. She is happy that some of them are blooming right now.
These type orchids are the oldest orchids grown among orchid growers, mostly in the foothills of the Himalayas. Confucius even mentions them in 550 BC as the Kings of Fragrance. They were actually formally named Cymbidium orchids in 1799 by a botanist named Olof Swartz; he was famous for having a collection of over 6000 orchids. He called these orchids little boats and the latin word for boat (or cup, bowl) is Cymba, which this flower name are derived from. These seem like they would be delicate but with the right light and moisture they are thriving in the California climate
