May 2, 2022, Journal Entry:
This flower on a tall bush-shrub is at a neighbor’s house near my mom in Southern California. I photographed this close up as I knew it was a hibiscus but did not know the actual type until I researched it this morning. It is called a Blue Hibiscus, which is kind of odd since it is more of a purple tone. I edited this image with a slight watercolor textural technique for a painterly style.
Blue Hibiscus (Alyogyne huegelii) are actually not considered a hibiscus any longer. They are not really blue either, but more of a lavender tone. This one is called Monterey Bay. They also grow well in Australia where they are known as West Coast Gem. The huegelii part of its technical name is named after Baron Von Huegel, an Austrian botanist in the 1800’s. It is growing well here in California, as this particular shrub is about 6 feet tall.
