Description
These beautiful Cymbidium orchid flowers were growing in my mother’s garden in California. They were blooming one on top of the other tall and bright. I processed the photograph in a mild painterly style and in a vertical panorama to draw attention to the profuse blooms of the flowers.
These type orchids are the oldest orchids grown among orchid growers, mostly in the foothills of the Himalayas. Confucius even mentions them in 550 BC as the Kings of Fragrance. They were actually formally named Cymbidium orchids in 1799 by a botanist named Olof Swartz; he was famous for having a collection of over 6000 orchids. He called these orchids little boats and the Latin word for boat (or cup, bowl) is Cymba, which these flowers are derived from. These seem like they would be delicate but with the right light and moisture they are easy to grow. My mother has enjoyed growing them for years and they grow well on her patio in the California weather.
