Description
In Springtime the wild trees that edge the lake, at Leisure Lake in Nocona, blossom out in pinks and cream colors. There are two types of trees in this image, the one with pink blossoms is a Red Bud tree and the other with creamy white blossoms, is I believe a young Bradford Pear tree. I love how the shining and wavy water behind the trees makes this image more interesting.
Red Buds are deciduous and can grow up to 30 feet tall, native to North America from New York down to Texas and Florida. A pretty tree for Spring. Technical name is Cercis Canadensis.
Bradford Pears (Pyrus calleryana) have a love-hate relationship with landscapers and gardeners. It is a beautiful tree when it flowers in the Spring and the leaves turn stunning colors in the Fall. The problems with this tree is that the limbs are not strong and tend to break in strong winds, even uprooting the trunks during heavy storms. They are native to the Far East and are considered an invasive species. They do make small fruit that is not edible for humans but the birds like it.
